A growing problem here

I talked about this in skype a bit, and I am just going to post what I said there here
Ser Rezima Esquire:
Gonna rant a bit
I've talked about it a bit here before, but never really pushed what I felt
But this server is NOT fun
you can claim it is meant for a more fun, challenging experience
but it just feels punishing and badly balanced
new players have a pattern
-they join,
-they die, then die again
-then they are forced into making coward archers
I am Brian:
You know they're retooling everything from the ground up, right?
Ser Rezima Esquire:
-or hiding behind the paladins
I am Brian:
You're not forced into making anything.
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
1. They are, yes retooling from the ground up
2. You are welcome to not play here if you find the challenge unrewarding
You are also welcome to put out any constructive criticism
but Shit's meant to be hard and hurt
Ser Rezima Esquire:
I am putting out constructive criticism, none of this is meant maliciously
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
Okay, go on. And I don't mean it maliciously when I say you're welcome not to play here
it's just literally not meant for everybody
Ser Rezima Esquire:
this is coming from someone who fucked up managing his last server
because I didn't listen to players enough
but I tried having a good time here
tried getting into roleplay
even got good at abusing the game mechanics
but the roleplay feels...elitist?
unless you are one of the knights you are largely irrelevant
the zombies are hard, but they feel almost TOO hard
they have close to 50 hp,
and hit for around 8
in a setting where most players have 6-16hp
I understand it is geared towards a certain niche
but it also pushes out new players
the core group seems almost impenetrable
In my time here I have felt more like an OOC spectator than an actual player
it just..isn't fun to me, and I know I am not the only person who thinks that
I hope the retooling fixes it, but at the moment I am just not interested in playing
and I usually like good challenging games, dark souls-esque games, etc.
just my opinion though, my first impression as a new player here
plus, rings of kinship
and raise scrolls
things that make a lot of people salty
at low levels, you are expected to work together to survive, or that you will die a lot
however, the only way to make a party is with a ring of kinship
which are impossible for any low level players to obtain
and from what I can tell, the higher level players are stockpiling raise scrolls for the rare times when they DO die
it's like someone told me earlier today
'it's not hard to get raised if you are an established player'
I don't doubt that it's true,
but players shouldn't have plot armour
you shouldn't become functionally invincible just because you are important
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
I'm sorry you feel that way - maybe this server really isn't for you. But, either way, you should post any criticisms you actually want to see an impact come out of on the forum - Skype's a really poor medium to make a difference.
Ser Rezima Esquire:
"I'm sorry you feel that way - maybe this server really isn't for you."
I hear this a lot too
maybe you are right,
but you still shouldn't just say that, that's how you lose players fast
it's an uncompromising attitude, it's essentially saying 'your complaints have been heard, but we don't care'
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
There's a difference between "we don't care" and "We're not changing because that's how it's meant to be". I mean it - post it on the forums. It really might not be the server for you. It's a niche market.
Ser Rezima Esquire:
So I hear, but I am not alone in this opinion unfortunately, I'm just one of the first to be vocal about it
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
Then post it on the forums. Seriously.
Ser Rezima Esquire:
I've brought this up with others players before and the general response has been
Sir Daniel Blackenlung:
It's the only place any actual discussion gets done that isn't washed away by morning
Ser Rezima Esquire:
'yeah, it sucks, that's just how it is though'
Essentially, a fair number of the newer players here aren't satisfied with the general experience given by the server.
This is not meant to be a malicious post by any means, and I would like to avoid any unnecessary 'Us vs. Them' arguments if at all possible, I am in no way attempting to create needless drama here, I and other have just noticed a growing problem with the server.
Put simply, it isn't fun.
In fact, it feels downright abusive most times, new characters have the hardest time surviving while trying to keep up with the unkillable gods that are the high level players. Those players that can solo a zombie in melee without being brutally murdered 10 times out of 10. Exploration is billed as being rewarding, but in my and others experience all we have found is our own dead characters, usually via attacks of opportunity after being invariably boxed in with no escape.
Death itself, while necessary, also feels too punishing. One of the worst feelings one can have is to write up a detailed backstory for a character, have it approved, and then have him brutally murdered an hour later after a zombie sneezed at him. Because despite having that second level, zombies can still one hit KO most all level 1-3 players if they get lucky.
Which is another point of contention, the zombies feel as though they are made of steel, they have close to 50hp, and hit like trucks. I made a mage thinking it would be slightly easier, but then realized it took me a dozen magic missiles and several frost rays to take down a single undead. it's the same with archers(which comprise 90% of all new players, as it is the only way for them to NOT die), archers get a full quiver of 99 arrows/bolts and use 20-30 of them per zombie, which quickly drains them of all of their difficult to obtain arrows.
I know the point of the server isn't to kill zombies, that you should avoid them when necessary. But when push comes to shove and you have to it shouldn't become a chore.
But my rant aside, I hear a new update is coming along, and from what I hear it is a great step in the right direction, and will hopefully fix most if not all of my issues with the gameplay. Which sounds great, I just don't know if it will fix all of the problems. Getting started here feels impossible, and it is pushing a lot of new players away soon after they join.
